Tom and John’s great idea

When Tom Hayes and the late John Sinclair founded Compco in 1988, they had no idea it would be a 40-million-pound business three decades later.

The initial vision was a smaller operation, providing a personable alternative to the four huge operators. They hadn’t envisaged becoming a leading UK provider of automatic fire suppression systems.

But that’s exactly what the two of them started.

 

The next chapter

Compco Fire Systems is pleased to announce ,effective from Wednesday 2nd March, 2022, that it has joined WTech Fire Group (Writech), one of the UK and Ireland’s largest specialist fire protection engineering companies.

 

Welcoming the announcement, Ted Wright, CEO of Wtech Fire Group, said: “Compco is a great business supported by a team of excellent people. Its purchase represents the continued realisation of our strategy to grow our UK business and strengthen our position as a leader in fire protection systems. We are very excited about the future prospects for the business and look forward to working with the team to build on their successes to date.”

Supportive project management

With some very respectable early projects, such as IKEA’s second biggest store in Birmingham, the Compco team grew, as did their following.

Consciously doing things differently from the outset, Tom and John wanted to take a project approach. This was a refreshing alternative to the contractual beasts that dominated the market at the time.

Undeterred, they supported each client, from concept to completion. Reducing risk early on, they provided plenty of specialist knowledge and collaboration to perfect the specification. Small and large organisations relied on Compco to minimise their fire-risk and create a system that was right first time.

High profile clients and climbing turnover

Project highlights included two production plants at Honda Swindon and the 42-storey Ritz Carlton Hotel on the Barcelona Olympic Games site.

One of the largest ever projects was Bart’s and The Royal London Hospital.

Meanwhile, turnover climbed: £10 million by March 2002; £30 million ten years later; £40 million in 2018. Opening a raft of offices across the UK, the Compco team were getting it right.

Great relationships built lasting loyalty

Whilst the business grew, Tom and John remained very much involved.

Actively involved in projects, they set the tone for a business that traded on strong relationships and early engagement. After all, this was what their clients wanted.

The hard work over three decades paid off, and today, Compco supports many loyal clients, project after project. Their reputation really does go before them.
